Free drug may help prevent heart attack repeat

Say you’ve had a heart attack and your insurance company offers You free medicines to help prevent one. Doctors do it in a major study and was astonished to find that only about half of patients take them.

Those who do suffer less heart-related problems and save $ 500 on average for health care for about a year. And no more insurance costs; in fact, the cost is lower because of the trend of fewer hospitalized.

Aetna plans to begin offering some of these medicines free or reduced to a few victims copayment of heart attack and is examining whether to do so for other chronic conditions such as diabetes and chronic lung disease, Reisman told The Associated Press.

This study might persuade other insurers to do the same, says heart specialist.
